Sandía con Chile or Spiced Watermelon

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Let's celebrate with a quick and delicious snack of spiced watermelon.

Sandía con chile or spiced watermelon is a popular Mexican street snack. It is also a great party food. Very easy to prepare, very easy to serve, perfect for a raw food buffet.

Ingredients:

  • nicely chilled watermelon
  • Mexican Tajin spice
  • freshly pressed juice of 5-6 limes
  • 4 limes cut in half for garnish

Method:

  • Wash and pat dry the watermelon. Using a sharp knife cut the melon into wedges. Cut the wedges into slices.
  • Arrange the melon slices on a large platter.
  • Pour lime juice over the watermelon slices and sprinkle generously with Tajin.
  • Garnish with halved limes and serve chilled. Enjoy in good company!

Tip: Tajin is a popular Mexican spice that combines hot chili, salt and dehydrated lime. If you are unable to buy Tajin in your grocery store, use any other hot pepper spice (cayenne pepper or hot pepper flakes, for instance.) Mix it with salt and lime zest. If you do not have a watermelon, use any other melon, jicama, cucumber, or mango. You can cut it in wedges and prepare individual servings in whisky glasses or tall tumblers.
