Winter Solstice Golden Milk Raw Vegan Bliss Balls

Happy Winter Solstice! Let's celebrate the shortest day of the year and the return to light with these healthy and nutritious superfood raw confections. They are very easy to make, so gather the ingredients and get the blades turning.

I used ingredients that are well researched for their immune system support and positive effects on mental wellbeing. I will write about them at a later time. For now, do your own research to find out more.

The amounts used produced fourteen bliss balls. I used a 1.5 Tbsp (about 25 ml) of dough per piece. You can make them smaller if you prefer, and remember that you are working with raw ingredients. Treat this recipe as a suggestion. You may have to adjust the amounts depending on the consistency of the dough you make. It should be soft but not runny, and easy to roll into balls. Add more dry ingredients if the dough is too soft. Add more hemp oil or orange juice if the dough is too dry and crumbly. For a stronger aroma you may want to use food grade organic orange essential oil. Also, remember that turmeric stains everything. Wear disposable food safe gloves if you want to prevent your hands from turning yellow.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups pecan nuts
  • 1/2 cup raw cacao
  • 5 soft medjol dates
  • zest of 2 organic, untreated oranges
  • freshly pressed juice of 1 orange
  • 1/3 cup hulled hemp seeds
  • 1/4 cup cold pressed hemp seed oil
  • 1/4 cup turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp freshly grated black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried ginger powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp pink Himalayan salt
  • 1 Tbsp powdered ashwagandha (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp powdered chaga mushroom (optional)

for the coating

  • 1/4 cup hulled hemp seeds
  • 4 Tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Method:

  • In a food processor whiz all the ingredients into a fairly soft, pliable dough. Transfer the dough into a bowl and let it rest for fifteen minutes or so.
  • Mix all the ingredients for coating in a small bowl and keep it ready.
  • Using a large measuring spoon, scoop out the dough and roll each portion into a ball. Roll each ball in the coating mixture and set aside.
  • Place the coated balls in the fridge for 30 minutes or so to set and allow the aromas to "marry" into a harmonic flavor.
  • Remove the confections out of the fridge and place them on a platter. Sprinkle with more of the coating spices and enjoy in good company!

Tip: I used only a few dates and no additional sweetener to make sure that these treats do not cause serious blood sugar spikes. The added cinnamon helps as well. I made my own spice and superfood mix, but you can use a ready, sugar and preservatives free, organic golden milk mix if you prefer. Just add enough of the powder to make sure you are getting flavor and all the health benefits of the spices. You can also use freshly grated  turmeric and ginger roots. Just keep in mind that dry spices are more concentrated in taste and flavor. If you are using CBD oil in your food, this would probably be a perfect recipe for you. Give it a try. Store your bliss balls in the fridge in an air tight container. They should last for at least one week.

Whatever you decide to do today, let your inner light shine.
