While some of you may still feel the effects of the recent nor'easter storms, many people already ditched their winter boots and sweaters many days ago. Although the official beginning of spring is still a few weeks ahead, many people already experience so-called spring fatigue. As the seasons change, our bodies sometimes struggle to adapt to the temperature fluctuations or the exposure to plant pollen. Despite the fact that the days are longer and warmer, many people, women especially, feel lethargic, irritated or even depressed. The change to Daylight Saving Time does not make things any easier for many of us.
Whether you are affected or not, change of seasons is a good time for a short fast or a detox routine that helps your body drop the "ballast" of winter and reboot. Now is the time to embrace clean, nutritious foods that not only provide energy but also help improve digestion and detoxification.
I use golden milk spices when the weather is still unpredictable. The warming spices can help boost the immune system, digestion and blood circulation, and even brighten the mood. My recipe is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidant nutrients, healthy fats, carbs, protein and fiber, and it is quite easy to make. Give it a try.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups grated carrot
- 3 cups walnuts
- 1 cup hemp hearts
- 2 inch long piece of fresh turmeric rhizome, grated
- 1 inch long piece of fresh ginger rhizome, grated
- 3 medjool dates
- 3 dried wild apricots, optional
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp lemon zest
- 2 Tbsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 Tbsp Ceylon cinnamon
- 1 /2 Tbsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch Himalayan pink salt to balance the flavors
- 1/4 cup cacao butter
- 2 Tbsp melted virgin coconut oil
- roughly chopped walnuts for garnish
Method:
- In a blender process all ingredients except the melted cacao butter and coconut oil. When everything is roughly chopped and well combined, add the melted oils while the food processor is working. The mass should come together. Leave it slightly coarse or blend until smooth. The longer you blend the smoother it will become.
- Take about 1 1/2 tablespoon of the mass and roll it into a ball. You may want to wear food-safe gloves to protect your hands from staining. You should be able to make at least 15 balls. Garnish each ball with chopped walnuts.
- Put the ready balls in a single layer into a glass container, close the lid and place them in the fridge to set completely. Cacao butter will help them stay firm at room temperature. Enjoy one or two in good company for a slight energy kick.
Tip: Use this basic recipe to make a breakfast porridge. Change the proportions. Use less nuts and twice as many grated carrots with their juice so that the mixture is quite moist. Add a little more lemon juice. Mix all ingredients and transfer the mass into a glass container. Close the container and place it in the fridge overnight. For breakfast, portion out the porridge. Garnish with chopped walnuts or fresh blueberries. If you prefer a smoothie, simply add one or two cups of freshly made nut milk and blend on high speed. Add a scoop of raw unflavoerd protein powder for enhanced nutrition.
To prevent blood sugar spikes and energy crash, I used only three dates and three dried apricots to sweeten these confections. If you want to make your energy bites sweeter than mine, use some liquid stevia.
