Healthy Green Banana Smoothie

The lush April greenery inspired me to make this green smoothie. It is green in color and taste and it is meant to be a healthier version of traditional banana smoothies since the main ingredient is a green, unripe banana.

Unripe, green bananas are rich in prebiotics. They have a lower glycemic index than the ripe bananas. They contain so called resistant starch that is resistant to the enzymes in the gut, and is believed to reduce blood glucose spikes after a meal.

Addiction to sugar and the sweet taste is prevalent in our society. Raw food lovers are often as afflicted as anyone on a conventional diet. Keep in mind that raw food is supposed to prevent chronic disease and keep you healthy, but excess sugar of any kind is detrimental to health.

Green banana smoothie ingredients

Ingredients:
  • 2 green bananas, roughly chopped
  • flesh of 2 avocados
  • 2 cups coconut water
  • freshly pressed juice of 1 lemon
  • tiny pinch Celtic sea salt
  • 1/2 cup green superfoods powder ( that contains garden greens, micro-greens, and algae)
  • 1 Tbsp ashitaba powder (optional)
  • 2-3 ice cubes (optional)

Method:
  • Toss all ingredients into a jar of your blender and whiz on high speed until smooth.
  • Pour the smoothie into glasses and enjoy in good company!

Tip: Green bananas are a little difficult to peel and they are sticky. Wear one way, food-safe gloves, and use a paring knife to make the process a bit easier. You can peel and freeze the sliced green bananas, and  keep them ready in the freezer for your next smoothie.

Supergreens and the ashitaba used in this recipe contain chlorophyll that makes this smoothie nice and green. I use these ingredients in my raw recipes whenever I can to keep my body in the alkaline state, and to prevent cancer and other diseases.

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a green plant that has been consumed in Japan for medicinal purposed for more than four hundred years.Traditionally, ashitaba has been used to cure indigestion, acid reflux, fever, flu, various infections, and even arthritis and gout. The plant is rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, calciunm, magnesium, and iron. It contains various active compounds, including flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, saponins, coumarins, and the chalcones that act as detoxifying agents and are researched for their blood sugar regulating and anti-tumor activity.

Like many green plants, ashitaba is quite amazing. Add it to your diet if you can.
