Watercress and Blueberry Detox Smoothie

Ideas come when ingredients are available. I got some gorgeous giant organic blueberries and my watercress micro-greens were big enough for the harvest. Blueberries are loaded with antioxidants. Watercress has blood cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties. Together they seem like a perfect combo for a healthy drink.

When seasons change, many of us think that it is time to detox. But do we need to detox at all?

A healthy, well functioning body has a natural ability to remove toxins via the liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, skin, and the intestines. Many experts believe that the best way to detox is to allow the body to do this job on its own. We can support this natural ability by choosing healthy lifestyle that includes balanced diet, physical activity, and sufficient rest.

If your diet is full of healthy ingredients you are nourishing your body and supporting the detoxification pathways. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants that protect the cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are produced by harmful substances but are also the by-products of normal cellular metabolism. They are both a cause and a result of chronic inflammation in the body. Inflammation is believed to be responsible for many degenerative diseases and premature aging. You can slow down these processes by choosing wisely what you put into your body. Some foods are loaded with antioxidants. Try to add more of them into your recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup watercress
  • 2 cups coconut water
  • 1 Tbsp mesquite powder
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2-3 ice cubes (optional)

Method:

  • Blast all ingredients in a blender.
  • Pour the smoothie into tall glasses. Garnish with micro-greens and enjoy in good company!

Tip: Use frozen blueberries if you prefer. Skip the banana and add avocado instead. Use fully grown watercress if you can get some.
